A photo that brings a thousand memories and coincidences.

I get all fuzzy with the turn of events with this photo. I am pasting the conversation.  When I finished High School, I taught in Kai Chung Secondary school, in Binatang. I left in Sept 1975.  Albert Lau and Lily Chan were seniors, and I didn't teach them, but as with the Chinese tradition, they regard me as their teacher.

My Dad was the DEO, Divisional Education officer of the region, and Albert lau tagged me this photo, which I saw for the first time. My Dad was in the dark Batik shirt.

Yesterday, Joe Chan whom I knew via New Zealand Chinese Association wrote the following comments. I was curious as Joe originally came from Africa, who was his friend, Edward Chieng who knew my Dad.

I did quite a bit of enquiry, Joe's friend was his in-law from Sibu, his sister in law is my Face book friend. Piecing the pieces together, Edward Chieng was also a DEO in another division and his with Josephine belongs to the same clan, the Quang ling as me, she she even went to my book launch.

Still lots to find out. Like when she went to the book launch, did she know I was my Dad's daughter.

I still don't know the occasion when this photo was taken.

Sorry to rake in the past. Joe Chan

Also every Sunday after Mass like today the children treat us to Dim Sum, today our table had 16.
  • Joe Chan I showed him the photo as wanted to know if they knew the famous Sibu writer, and did a lot of tracing till he immediately said he know your Dad. I am also happy as our old age memories gets sharper as we age.
    • Ann Chin writing helps very much, events of the past comes out from the recess of our brains.
    • Ann Chin

      Write a reply...

  • Ann Chin Thank you very much Joe.Will you tell him I send him a friend request. Any friend of my Dad is much appreciated, and his wife and I from the same Quang Ling Village. If she came to the book launch, I might have seen her, but I was too busy to remember her.

Ticks and My sister Margaret and our dogs.

Recently I watch news on Ticks clinging on to snakes, Ticks biting woman leading to amputation of her 4 limbs.

I am reminded of when I was in high school, our dogs harboured ticks. My sister Margaret and would use a pincer and pince the ticks off the poor dogs' ears and in between the gaps of their paw.

Most of them were quite small but occasionally some were bigger than my pinky finger nail. The poor dogs  yelped in pain. Some one told us to dab the ticks with kerosene, but the poor dogs would yelp louder in bigger pain. The ticks held on and the kerosene burnt the dogs Eventually some one suggested coconut oil. Mom bought us some, and we dabbed it on the ticks. It killed the tick and it released it's evil claws. The oil was also a balm to the poor dogs.

The still alive ticks, we soaked them in coconut oil, and we were thrilled to see them go to to a slow oily grave. Occasionally, in vengeance, we squeezed the fat ticks, and felt so sorry for our dog because the bugger had sucked so much blood from the poor dogs.

As I look back, I felt rather bemused, we were our own little vets. Margaret has become a " bona fide" vet, she has a doctorate in Agriculture and is a professor. As for me, I never kept a dog as an adult.

The top photo, my children and friends found some puppies and a stray mother dog. The person who reported them to SPCA complained the puppies might have ticks.

My boy is into rock climbing and bought this pair of shoes. Minimalist Running Shoes

The VIVOBAREFOOT ONE is the ultimate on-road or in-gym barefoot performance shoe. The uppers feature a lightweight and breathable hex mesh with V-Web lamination for stitch-less lateral support. It is also lined with a soft fit performance lining containing environmentally friendly Aegis to provide active moisture management, anti-stink, and a pure barefoot experience.

This is my beach shoe, the sole is even thinner than the minimalist shoe. You wear it to the beach so shells don't cut you. People going to windsurfing also wear this.
My winter slippers which looks like an Ugg boot.

Yesterday, our TV reported a lavish wedding of a deputy mayor in Australia. It reminded me of the other lavish wedding in New Zealand which was reported as the most expensive wedding of the world in 2011.

The lavishness was reported on television and newspaper.

Fat Indian wedding, it was a copy cat of the Fat Greek wedding, I have not seen the either movies. This was what they justified themselves.

Part of the wedding, blessing of the boy, happened to be temple next door to my old house. I heard and saw the aeroplane flying with the banner. I  went out Wo! so many people.

Apparently, the Dad was some billionaire from Chicago.I happened to be along the Balmoral Road where it was closed for the procession where the the groom, his dad and his grooms men came on horse back to the temple for the blessing.

They wanted elephants and a cheetah. The Council rejected this, and the entourage came in horses. There were helicopters and planes with banners, hundreds of guest flown in from USA.

After much criticism, they came in defense that they were filming the wedding as the Fat Indian Wedding, and would bring in millions of tourism money.

Why would people want to make their wedding public is beyond me.

Australian wedding, four helicopters and cavalcade of sportscars upset neighbours as Auburn Deputy Mayor Salim Mehajer weds. A road was closed. Looks like this wedding is the Fat Indian Wedding Two.

corn and my mum and letter N

We always associate my mum with corn.

She was sowing corn so we could have sweet corn. She counted exactly 11 seeds. I told her there was now only 8 kids as big brother had gone to New Zealand. Mum said," in my heart, I am still growing for him."

On one occasion. She had just migrated to Australia and living in the mountains. She told my dad and brother the land would be really good to grow corn.

The two men humored her and tilled the land. She sowed the corn and used precious water to water the seedlings.

One morning, they heard her say, "Shoo!Shoo! Naughty Kangaroo." The kangaroos had eaten all her corn seedlings. Those kangaroos were such a nuisance, and Mum never asked Dad to dig the garden for her again. And dad did not offer.

Knitting and Yarn Bombing

My handsome guide, Robin telling me about these woolly poles. Cheeky me, I coaxed him to let me take his photo. I told him, we were outside the shop. They call this yarn bombing. May be because I am a grand child of the war. I hate waste.  Knitting takes a long time. To have precious knitting exposed to weathering, fade and tatters and become ugly is not me. In some places, they even wrap tall trees.
New Zealand has more sheep that humans, naturally we have a lot of wool. When I see this Yarn Bombing, my heart aches and remember the time in Form 3 when the Chinese Teacher Miss Wong taught me a some Malay girls.  CHE DIAO CHE DIAO.(Undo, Undo) So difficult to knit, and these artistic people knit them and put them outside and subject to weathering.

We even wrap our poles to keep them warm.

Here are the woollypoles, there were a lot of them.

The Devonport Arts Festival took place 17–25 November 2012. The Woollypoles were installed on Saturday 17 November.

1. You can knit or crochet.

2. Your piece needs to be 37cm wide x any length.

3. Choose one colour for your artwork (not black, white or brown).

4. Feel free to use any type of yarn in as many shades of your colour as you like.
You can make stripes or patterns, but please stay within your colour.
No multi-coloured pieces, please.

5. Lettering and/or embellishments can be in another colour, the complementary colour is recommended. All poles are vertical, if that has an impact on your design.

We are a nation of knitters. My daughter is now knitting like crazy.

People donate their recipes and the recipe books are sold to raise money for the building and running of a school in Northern Thailand.

Volunteers go to a neighbouring school and help spruce up the compound and building.

My Nepalese friend Prinka's effort to help earthquake torn Nepal.
Someone cooks a meal for four, someone bid for it in a silent auction. The proceeds goes to the school in Northern Thailand.

In New Zealand, we have a Television show "Good sorts" where people who do special things are acknowledged. These photos show people from my church deserved to be acknowledged as "Good Sorts."

the clock was working when my cousin Cecilia came to visit.

Procedure [Friday My Town Shoot Out Link-Up]

Can you share a procedure from your town or city with us? Something that occurs regularly and always at the same time? From town clocks to traffic lights, let your imagination run wild.

Today, I revisited the very spot I had my wedding photos taken just over 35 years ago. Of course, on that day, I was dreamy eyed, and didn't notice how beautiful the trees were. The floral clock was there and it worked at that time, Apparently some idiot had vandalized the hands too many times. The city fathers decided, enough was enough. The hands were no longer replaced. Which is such a pity. Because tourists used to love this and take photos,
Albert Park also holds dear to me, as it borders Auckland university. I used to spend many lunch hours with other students and city worker.

Dad and some enterprising boys

Photos: I took these at Wellington Johnsonville.

A real story:

After the war, Dad went to Singapore to study. He  was in a hostel in a 7 day Adventist school, next to a very big cemetery. The Bidadari Cemetery was just near door.

His seniors told him to come earn some pocket money. They showed him how to scoop of the melted candle.

A man came on a bike to buy the molten wax. Dad initially felt uncomfortable. But after a while money took over fear.

Bidadari Cemetery was a multi-religious burial ground opened on 1 January 1908. It was located at the junction of Upper Serangoon Road and Upper Aljunied road, and derived its name from the wife of Maharaja Abu Bakar of Johor, whose istana had stood there.[12] The word “bidadari” is itself derived from the Sanskrit word “widyadari”, which literally means ‘nymph’ or ‘fairy’.
The cemetery contained burial sites for several religions and races, including Roman Catholics, Protestants, Muslims and Hindus. When it was opened, the Roman Catholic and Protestant sections also each had their own chapel. The cemetery was also used for military burials, and was the resting place for a number of prominent individuals. One of these was the English sailor Augustus Podmore Williams, upon whose life Joseph Conrad based his novel Lord Jim.
Bidadari Cemetery was closed in 1973,

Mr. Ting Ming Siong, Guiness book of records.

Up Date: When I returned to Sibu in 2013 to launch my books, I had become Facebook friends of Andy, Mr. Ting's son. He apologised he couldn't come, and told me Mr. Ting was selling his noodles just where I was staying, RH hotel.

Unfortunately, I was in a rush to fly to Miri, and didn't have time to go and say hi.

This was posted about five years ago.

In 1991, when I was living in Singapore, I was very surprised and proud that a man from my home town Sibu, Mr. Ting Ming Siong held a Guiness World Record. I read with pride that he held the record for being a best man for the most number of times.

That Christmas, I returned to Sibu to visit my relatives. My aunts treated me to a restaurant at the See Hua Daily News factory at Sungai Antu. Lo and behold, who did I see seated at the next table? I asked my aunt if he was who I thought he was. My aunt said yes, and asked how I knew. I told her I read it in the Newspaper in Singapore.

I asked my aunt why he was so popular. She said he is very eloquent in his speech. He was not just a bestman, people requested his services as a Toastmaster and his toasts.

I went to congratulate him and asked if I could have a photo with him and his lovely wife and family. He was very happy to oblige and that the news paper in Singapore published an article about him.

Last evening, I made a new Facebook friend orignally from my home town, but now workinging in Miri. Christopher Gan is a Wedding Planner at Grand Palace Hotel, Miri. His friend commented that he must have organised so many weddings that he could be in the guiness records, I asked Christipher if he knew about this Best man.

Christopher said yes, and told me that Mr. Ting runs a coffee shop called Delta Cafe in Sibu. He sent me a photo of that important document.

Thank you Christopher for the Coffee Shop photos and his own with the chef.

Here's another of my bucket list ticked. To be photographed with a famous person, a Guiness World Book record holder. It pays to be shameless and ask to have a photo taken with famous people.

ABC Letter H for Hindu

I was five when we moved to the Government quarters in Sibu.

There was a Hindu Temple which this building has replaced., At that time, it was a small building full of mystique. We did not see worshipers or priest. The windows were closed and there were rails about the windows for ventilation. We climbed up to see the many idols there. Outside, there was a well, and somehow, we kids made up a rumour that it was haunted. Some one had drowned there. There were calamansi aka lime trees and the fruits were high up. We climbed up to steal them. There were some gardenia bushes and we stole the buds.

When I grew up, I became a faculty wife. My husband became a university lecturer at Nanyang Technological University. I met other faculty wives, and many are Hindus. The mystique is gone, I became their very good friend. I was invited to a wedding and to their apartments. They like elephants. They do a puja.

I wrote my book," Cry, the Oppressed women." and I based my book on some Hindu women and families.

Photo one is a recent one from my friend Jayalakshmi Saratchandran.

The orange colour, is a fake flower, to raise fund for Arthritis New Zealand. I imagine it is a sunflower, giving a ray of hope to the sufferers.

This is a disease that the Chinese know very well. When we were young, we were told to wear dry clothes, keep our hair dry. If not, when we grew old, we will get Arthritis.

http://www.medicinenet.com/arthritis/focus.htm

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints, the tissue around the joints, as well as other organs in the body. Because it can affect multiple other organs of the body, rheumatoid arthritis is referred to as a systemic illness and is sometimes called rheumatoid disease.

Alphabe-Thursday letter P for planting

This "poker" rice planting equipment children had to used to help their parents can really turn kids off planting rice.
Thanks Francis Chen for this photo and lending me your son as the model. I guess in the past, kids didn't wear shoes.

This is a traditional South-East Asian nursery rhyme originated from the Philipines. It tells the of back-breaking, dirty, squishy muddy work under a sweltering sun

My music teacher taught me this song, and I in turn teach my New Zealand students. Rice is a valuable commodity and we are taught not to waste it. A common grandma's warning to kids who don't finish their bowl of rice will marry a spouse with pock marks.

When I was teaching in Kai Chung School in Binatang/Bintangnor, I went back to my parents' home in Sarikei in the weekends. Sometimes, I caught a bus, sometimes I took a boat called an express. The bus took me pass rice/padi fields like the photo. I took this during our recent reunion.
My student/friend Francis explains how he used to plant rice.
Francis Kim Hung Tiong I use to when I was in Form 2. My dad asked me to move in front to poke holes into the soft ground so that they follow behind to plant the rice. That tools got 4 pokers, so it make 4 holes in a roll. At the end of the line, ONLY THREE HOLES REMAINS!

  • Ann Chin Thanks for first hand info, I have added it to my blog, and will use it when I teach. Don't understand this line. At the end of the line, ONLY THREE HOLES REMAINS!
  • Drawn by Francis Tiong

  • Francis Kim Hung Tiong That means I didn't go straight! Instead of 4 holes only 3 remains. My dad did the first row already. So he ask me to continue with the 2nd rowl only when my elder sister realized that she has no hole to plant her rice seedling.

    Planting rice is never fun
Bent from morn till the set of sun,
    Cannot stand and cannot sit,
Cannot rest for a little bit.

    Planting rice is no fun
Bent from morn till set of sun,
    Cannot stand, cannot sit,
    Cannot rest a little bit.

Oh, come friends and let us homeward take our way,
Now we rest until the dawn is gray,
Sleep, welcome sleep, we need to keep us strong
    Morn brings another workday long.

Oh, my back is like to break,
Oh, my bones with the damp still ache,
And my legs are numb and set
For their long soaking on the wet.

In English "Planting is no joke" We did the actions. We loved nursing our sore bodies. It is no wonder kids don't want to plant rice.

I modified the song for teaching and added my own humorous last stanza to make it current affairs. This post has evoked memories of my friends who once planted rice  helping their parents. Today, they are engineers and bankers.

I feel so privileged as their ex teacher, especially when I did not teach them in their class. They ave submitted work that I needed.

Thank you all for brainstorming and helping me out . This post is an unexpected one from the Kai Chung Reunion.

    Planting rice is never fun
Bent from morn till the set of sun,Cannot stand and cannot sit,Cannot rest a little bit.

Oh, my back, wants to break,
Oh, my bones are so painful,
And my legs are numb and set
Because of the soaking in the wet.

    Planting rice is never fun
Bent from morn till set of sun,
    Cannot stand and cannot sit,
    Cannot rest a little bit.

Papa, I am not going to plant anymore,
I am going to work very hard,
I am going to be an engineer,
Or a banker in the nice office.

Oh, my back, wants to break,
Oh, my bones are so painful,
And my legs are numb and set
Because of the soaking in the wet.

Children today don't want to eat rice,
They want to go for fast food,
    French fries and Hamburgers,
    Or  pizzas and spaghetti.

Oh, my back, wants to break,
Oh, my bones are so painful,
And my legs are numb and set
Because of the soaking in the wet.
