Boric acid I use as an ant bait. Boric acid poisoning

Boric acid is a dangerous poison. Poisoning from this chemical can be acute or chronic. Acute boric acid poisoning usually occurs when someone swallows powdered roach-killing products that contain the chemical.  don't use if u have pets.

Abalone aka paua.

400 tonnes of paua (abalone) were illegally harvested from New Zealand waters. Most of them destined for foreign restaurants especially Chinese markets.

1000 tonnes of paua are harvested. At this rate, NZ will be like Canada and outh Africa, all their abalone stock being depleted.

I do not buy abalone. Besides the exorbitant price, I don't think the taste is so great to warrant he price.

In the old days, you can buy the green ugly unappetising paua in the fish market. But not any more, it is too expensive for the local market, exept in uppity restaurants where they make them into paua fritters.

rtising.

My sister Grace: When I have dinner with my in laws, I use mock abalone. They are less than $20 for 500gm and they taste like real abalone. I remember we had mock abalone with Joseph (I think in Kuching), and he thought it was the real mccoy.

In the older days up till 1970s when the water engineer was a student in Christchurch, Paua shells were used for their attractive colours to make jewellery, and souvenirs. Most people didn't eat paua. Now they cost a lot.

I will kick off this series of being green. I am green but not a greenie with extreme views. I will not tie myself to trees if they are threatened to be cut down.
I just like the green environment. I will post pictures of plants and trees. I will not attempt to name them all because I don't know them. If I lead you stray, I will end up with egg in my face.
Just enjoy what God has created.
***This truck is our green truck. The normal garbage collector does not collect garden waste. The green truck comes to those people who have arranged for their collection. They put their "green waste" in a special green bag or a wheelie"***

Save the world: Grow patches of native plants in the city

http://reducefootprints.blogspot.com/

When you visit Singapore, and go out to the west, you will come to the Nanyang Technological University. You will see many manicured gardens. You will also see a patch of green. Dependng on who or what are you, you will see it as either a piece of natural paradise, or a piece of eye sore.

This is a legacy left by me after living 16 years there. What started was similar to the allotment in UK. The university didn't like the residents to plant any where, and after lots of negotiation, they gave us this plot. Unfortunately, it was at a slope and under big rain trees whose canopy blocked the sun.

Friends came to plant and left frustrated by the plants failing to grow. I was the only one undetered, I didn't care if people stole my bananas, because I didn't eat them, the pandan leaves as I didn't use them. But I did care when they pulled up my clumps of lemon grass. Any way, I had fun getting my fingers dirty.

When I left about fours years ago, the plot was abandoned. The native plants and ferns thrived. I revisited last July. Friends told me that it is gone. I thought the university had dug up my plants. To them, gone meant good bye to my manicured garden. To me, it was quite beautiful as it is. It probably houses a lot of insects like praying mantises and butterflies.

was curious about Neem as pesticide. These are my 2 trees in NTU in Singapore. I watch on TV, you can make yr own pesticide by blending leaves and steep in cold water for a few days. I did once use the paste on my daughter's head, and she said it was soothing. Anyone have a neem tree?

Lee Judy We have these trees everywhere. My thai

friend would harvest the young leaves whenever

MPPP comes to trim the trees n make kerabu. I use

them for my children n grandchild when they had

chickenpox. Stuff an old sarong with lots of leaves

and sleep on it. It will stop the itch. My Indian cleaner

use it to bathe the baby borne with jaundice

Thinking of my oldest daughter. Many years ago, grafted cacti was popular, and I was crazy about them. My daughter went abroad, bought me one, and took lots of photos.

Saw these in our garden centre, and thought of her who is abroad.

Economy trumps environment for India's rivers

About ten years ago, I watch a video on the death of Ganges, people left semi cremated bodies in the river.

Economy trumps environment for India's rivers

Discharges into the Yamuna river in Delhi point to an environment under severe strain, despite government efforts.

Faiz Jamil |
Industrial waste from inland areas and untreated sewage pour into the river through discharge drains [File: AP]New Delhi, India - Polluted rivers in India pose a major threat to agriculture and public health but there are few signs that costly efforts to tackle the problem are making headway.

In New Delhi, hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent since the 1990s to clean up the Yamuna river - but with little positive impact.
Fears are now growing that the emphasis placed by candidates in the country’s recent elections on kick-starting India’s economic engine - which has slowed to less than five percent - will confine efforts to revive the country’s dying rivers to the back seat.
Journey back in time
Residents in New Delhi in the 1960s still recall swimming and fishing in the Yamuna every day.
But today, most people cannot bear to walk by the river for more than a few minutes, overwhelmed by the foul stench of garbage and, at times, stagnant water.

Waitangi Day 6th Feb

As Waiatngi day approaches, I recall 2009 when I had the most meaningful celebration with a difference. Teaching people to be zero waste.

Zero-waste Management Strategy:
Here's the collection of the bags by some of the volunteers, including a very young boy. Ka Pai to him. They had to lug the heavy bags to the quad bikes as runners.
The back-end" of the system is the worst of the jobs. Resource Recovery Centre Manager, Chris with some volunteers have the awful job of additionl sorting of bagged waste. When we finished our part at our stations, we helped them out. We had to sort out the three groups of rubbish, and by the time I left at 7.45pm, they were still working.
What I admire about the Maoris is their ability to joke. One uncle I didn't get his name asked if I got enough of being a Maori. I told him I was just very tired with the sun getting into my head. He joked that he had to do this every day, and he should be called a garbatologist. Another joked that we should have diplomas. Some one joked that disposible nappies should be banned.
I did not meet Ivy who liaised with the stall holders, and Te Hira (Chiefy) who sets waste stations with Ngarimu and monitors the effectiveness of the waste plan.
The volunteers are the silent brigades that made the festival a pleasant one for the festival goers. I have been to many countries, and usually at the end of the day, there is a mountain of rubbish. The Orakei park was very clean, free of rubbish at the end of the festival.
Ka Pai to Ngarimu, Te Hira, Chris, and Ivy for all their planning and logistics. Ka Pai to all the volunteers. Ka Pai to everyone in the Marae for letting me stay in the marae. Something I always wanted to do, but never got the chance.

Would you still want me?

I have posted this in my stories site, but I really love this photo and this song.
I am not a good singer, nor do I remember lyrics, but I love this Beatles song. I often when I am doing the dishes sing," Would you still want me, would you still love me, when I am 64?"

I have been singing this more frequently since I celebrated my big five O with a big bang of running the quarter marathon. Since then, I have not run at all. Yesterday, I went for a looong walk of three and half hours. In the lovely park of Western Springs, the sun was shining, love is in the spring air, I saw this couple.

They epitomized what love it all about. He was in a scooter, and she, sitting on the bench with a walking frame. Ka Pai. I love it.

When I'm Sixty Four (64)
~ The Beatles

When I get older losing my hair,
Many years from now.
Will you still be sending me a valentine
Birthday greetings bottle of wine.

If I'd been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door,
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.

You'll be older too,
And if you say the word,
I could stay with you.

I could be handy, mending a fuse
When your lights have gone.
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday mornings go for a ride.

Doing the garden, digging the weeds,
Who could ask for more.
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.

Every summer we can rent a cottage,
In the Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera, Chuck & Dave

Send me a postcard, drop me a line,
Stating point of view
Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours sincerely, wasting away

Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine for evermore
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.
