This fireman exudes WARMTH.  He allowed me to take photos. In New Zealand, a fireman ranks very high up in the " when I grow up, I want to be a ........"

Yes, they came to school. We had a false alarm. The kids were very excited.

My World Tuesday: Rivers in Sarawak

Last month,on the 28th of May, an overcrowded boat similar to the above aeroplane looking boat sank, and 20 perished. The boat is still under the Rejang River. People who are not from the Rejang area are weary of going in these boats.

Having been married to a water engineer for more than 30 years, it is inevitable that part of his water knowledge is passed on to me.

The river traffic  has increased, and the banks get eroded. Once, near my maternal grand father's village house, two of those boats had a head on collision. Many drowned.

In the early 1970s, there was a terrible accident involving like the ones below. A teacher took some students in long boats to the rapids. Many students died. My cousin was swept down river and it was a miracle she survived.

These two photos were taken when I went up the mountains at Mulu. This was part of the popular tourist itinerary. The river flow was swift. There were parts where the water was so shallow, they had to use poles to move the boat. We respected the power of the river by wearing life jackets and not over crowding the boats.

The adventurers deliberately came from all over the world to Mulu Caves to watch bats dance.
Sam and me, Sam was not very happy, I was despondent and annoyed. We walked miles and miles to see millions of bats from flying out. The rains dampened our spirits and we were disappointed. Not one bat came out.

I first came across a set of Russian dolls at my very good friend Owlyn's house. When I saw this set in Sentosa Singapore, in a Tourist shop in Asian Village, I knew I must have it. There was only one set, and I was so pleased to have it.

Owlyn had been with me through thick and thin. She uplifted me during my most difficult times of my life. My mum and my son's death, both premature ones.

A matryoshka doll, a Babushka doll or a Russian nested doll, also called a stacking doll, is a set of dolls of decreasing sizes placed one inside the other

Much later, my Sudanese student sold me a set of Arabian dolls.

Glass Russian doll.

The ‘Odd Rule’ of Composition

“Odd numbers are better than Even ones in photography.”
I heard about this ‘odd rule’ years ago in a magazine and laughed it off as the author having some sort of obsessive compulsive disorder – but ever since I heard it I’ve noticed that in the shots I take it is true.
I’m not exactly sure why it works – but it does. Perhaps it’s about the balance that odd numbers create (there’s always one thing in the centre to give balance)?
I find that three objects in a shot are particularly good. Five, Seven or more can work but you run the risk of clutter.
Give it a try – it works!

Sunday Stills: One Tree Hill, Auckland, New Zealand.

The obelix monument is on top of One Tree Hill extinct volcano.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Tree_Hill,_New_Zealand

The monument and the one tree were one of Auckland's most obvious landmark. However, the One tree Hill has become None tree Hill. Tourists often ask this question ,"Why is it called One Tree Hill, when there is no tree?"

Until 2000, a radiata pine tree stood next to the obelisk. This tree (one of two pines) had been planted to replace a sacred Māori Totara tree, the tree which had given Maungakiekie its English name. This totara had been cut down by a white settler in 1852 for firewood.

However, in the early 1960s during a jamboree, a group of overseas Boy Scouts cut down one of the two newer pines. The remaining tree was later attacked twice with chainsaws by Māori protesters (partly because it was not a native New Zealand species and thus considered an insult). The first attack happened on 28 October 1994, the anniversary of the 1835 Declaration of Independence.[2] A second attack on the 5th of October 2000[3] left the tree unable to recover and so it was removed due to the risk of it dying and falling down.

This is a place of reverence and sacred memorial place for both the Maoris and Pakehas. But some people have no respect. They deface the place with graffitti and broken beer bottles. They harrass visitors. Now alcohol is banned at nightand the police checks the place frequently.

The Next Challenge: Historical sites and markers

This challenge will be both a difficult and informative challenge. I almost feel like a history teachergiving out homework but hey, next week we will all learn something new. So for this challenge we are looking for historical sites, markers or monuments.

Every so often, these technicians come and work on these phone boxes. Usually I am discrete when I take the photos. Once I got near and took a photo. The technician told me it was illegal to take the photo. He said it was government property. I was afraid he would rip the camera from me.

In the midst of a 21st century concrete jungle of Singapore, I protected myself with a green jungle, Nanyang technologgical Univeristy.  This jungle gave reprieve and enjoyment to my overseas friends.

I had a gardening column in a website which provided a lot of information on "How to grow in a tropical island."

Here are just some of my plants.

Johor Ferns give a good carpet cover

I grew the bird's nest fern from a little seedling, and put it under a big tree.

Blue ginger aka galangal for curry, Thai and Chinese dishes.

Yellow ginger aka Tumeric,

Peace lily.

Dracaena

Pandan

Banana for fruit and leaves

Papayas.

The others are local herbs.

Combine the goodness of honey with the vicks throat drop, you get a naturally flavoured yummy drop which is both  great in  taste and is effective.

Especially in the cold winter, where we are more susceptible to colds and flus, it is great to know that this little drop helps dry itchy throat. Banish that hum hum embarrassing moment.
